Benefits of Video Games on Cognitive Development in Children
Written by: Aurelia Budiman

When it comes to children and video games, parents often perceive them as having a detrimental impact on their children's development. However, research has demonstrated that children who play video games possess several advantages that those who do not play do not experience.

Firstly, the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, which examined nearly 2,000 children, found that those who played video games for three hours or more each day outperformed their peers who had never played on cognitive skills tests related to impulse control and working memory. The researchers discovered that these gamers were quicker and more accurate in completing cognitive tasks, showcasing better reaction times and enhanced working memory, along with detectable brain function changes in areas associated with vision, attention, and memory processing.

In addition, video games can help children develop their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Many video games offer players intricate puzzles and challenges that require logical reasoning and critical thought to complete the games. These games push players to think creatively, devise strategies, and make swift decisions. By participating in such activities, players can improve their problem-solving skills and enhance their capacity for critical thinking.

Finally, video games can also enhance the social skills of children. Online multiplayer games offer a platform for players to connect and collaborate with others globally. Through teamwork and coordination, players learn to communicate, negotiate, and cooperate effectively. These social interactions within video games can carry over into real-life situations, thereby improving their social skills.
