The Psychological Effects of Social Media Use
Written by:  Canika Zhu

In this modern era, social media has become an inseparable part of daily life for millions of people worldwide. While social media offers numerous positive effects, such as connecting people in different parts of the world and increasing information accessibility, it also brings several negative consequences, particularly concerning self-esteem and social behavior.

In terms of the positive aspects of social media, this tool allows individuals to form social connections with others. For those who may feel disconnected from society due to geographical or personal reasons, social media platforms like TikTok or Instagram may give them the opportunity to meet new people as well as form bonds with others. Aside from that, users can also express their hobbies and interests, allowing them to feel a boost in self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment during challenging times.

On the other hand, social media also carries various negative effects on human psychology, such as its significant impact on one’s mental health. While social media allows everyone to share their ideas freely, the “comparison culture” present may also demotivate certain individuals, as they may feel that their lives are not as curated as the idealized version of what others present online. Additionally, the addictive nature of social media has a negative impact on one’s psychological state due to the attention-grabbing content created by interesting features and the advanced algorithm.

In conclusion, while social media can allow individuals to make connections and act as a valuable resource of support, its adverse effects—such as feelings of inadequacy and lower self-esteem—cannot be neglected. Hence, to prevent these challenges from happening, users of social media should be mindful of their actions and have good self-control to take advantage of social media as a tool to simplify tasks in people’s daily lives while minimizing its potential harm.
