Will Artificial Intelligence Replace Jobs?
Written by: Canika Zhu

Artificial intelligence, defined as a technology that allows people to generate, arrange, and perform duties, first appeared in the early 1900s. However, it experienced a surge in the 21st century, particularly in 2023, with the rise of major technological AI companies such as OpenAI (ChatGPT), Microsoft, and Nvidia. AI has now become an inseparable part of our lives and is expected to grow even further, transforming industries in the process.

The development of artificial intelligence has successfully made people's lives easier in various ways. One of which is to process and analyze large amounts of information rapidly, enhancing learning experiences. Aside from that, AI can also act as a translation tool, assisting communication between people from different backgrounds.

Although artificial intelligence presents many opportunities, there are also some threats that we need to take into consideration before it is too late. One of the major concerns is whether artificial intelligence will replace jobs, as it has already been widely implemented in today’s world. Take, for example, the robot baristas present in supermarkets.

Another example is ChatGPT, an AI software that has been reported to pass multiple job interviews from highly ranked multinational companies, such as a coder at Google and Amazon, which is expected to pay $187,000 and $135,000 USD, respectively. Additionally, the latest version of ChatGPT (GPT 4) has successfully passed the exam from law and business schools, further underscoring AI’s growing capabilities.

In conclusion, although artificial intelligence is highly beneficial and plays a huge role in our lives, we should not ignore the threat it may bring to our society soon. Therefore, the development of AI should be done carefully to prevent these situations from happening, as well as ensure the mindful use of AI by people in this modern world.
