Behind the World’s Richest Man: Bernard Arnault
Written by: Canika Zhu
In the year 2023, Bernard Arnault successfully accumulated an estimated fortune of $211 billion, surpassing last year’s No. 1 Elon Musk by $31 billion as the World’s Richest Man of 2023. Bernard Arnault, commonly known as the CEO of Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH), has been the majority shareholder for more than three decades. After gaining control of LVMH, he managed to turn the company into the world's largest luxury goods company, establishing more than 70 brands such as Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Givenchy, Tiffany & Co, Sephora, Marc Jacobs, and many more.
After getting a brief background on Arnault, let’s go through what he has done to achieve success. Bernard Arnault was born to an industrial family on March 5, 1949, in Roubaix, France. He graduated from the École Polytechnique in Paris with an engineering degree. Arnault started his professional career in 1971 as an engineer in the Ferret-Savinel construction company and was subsequently promoted to various executive management positions before successfully becoming chairman in 1978.
In 1984, when Bernard Arnault learned that Christian Dior’s parent company, Boussac, had filed for bankruptcy, Arnault put up his $15 million and $45 million from his partners to purchase Boussac. Arnault established his own investment firm, Group Arnault, and began acquiring shares from companies such as Moët Hennesy and Louis Vuitton.
In 1987, Louis Vuitton merged with Moet-Hennesy to form LVMH and reinvigorated Christian Dior as the foundation of the new organization. Arnault became the majority shareholder of LVMH in 1989, assuming the positions of chairman and CEO since then.
In the process of building LVMH, the world’s largest luxury brand, Arnault encountered various challenges. When the merger was newly formed, Racaimer, the great-grandson-in-law of the Vuitton company’s founder, found his position threatened by Arnault. Racaimer insisted on maintaining control over his fiefdom. However, the merger agreement named Racaimer as deputy chairman and head of the strategic committee.
In conclusion, no one’s success is simple. Even the world’s richest man took decades to build his world-leading luxury brand. He encountered challenges such as a lack of investment funds, fighting over control, and many others. Therefore, it is important to always remember to not be afraid of failure and learn from previous mistakes.
